The Creation of the Kumaras and others

In continuation of the description of creation , Sri Maitreya Rishi said to Vidura:” O learned Vidura,so far I have explained to you the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His feature as eternal Time -Kala ,Now hear from me about the creation by Brahma,the reservioir of all Vedic knowledge .

1.The First ,Misleading Creation

In the beginning of creation ,Brahma first created five kinds of nescience-self deception,forgotfullness of one’s real identity,attachment to false ownership,anger after frustration,and the sense of death.Seeing that this was a sinful and misleading creation,Brahma did not feel pleasure, He therefore purified himself by meditation on the Supreme Lord and began again .

2.The Birth of the Four Kumaras –

Then from his mind ,Brahma created his four most beloved sons -the great sages- Sanak,Sanandana,sanatana and sanat -Kumara.They were born as pure ,five years old boys,eternally liberated,with their semen flowing upwards due to their strict celibacy.When Brahma ordered them ,”My dear sons,now generate progeny and fill the universe ,” they refused .

Being deeply attached to LordVasudeva the Supreme Personality of Godhead ,they desired only liberation and the path of devotion . They chose to remain life long brahmcharis against the wish of their father .

3. The Birth of Lord Rudra –

On hearing the refusal of his sons,great anger arose in Brahma’s mind.He tried to control it,but could not .That anger came out from between his eyebrows,and immediately a child of mixed blue and red color was generated.

The child began to cry loudly .He said ” O destiny maker ,teacher of the universe,kindly designate my name and place.”Brahma pacified him with gentle words and said,”Do not cry: Since you have cried so anxiously ,you shall be called by the name Rudra by all people.

Then Brahma gave him places of residence : the heart,the senses,the life air,the sky,the air,fire,earth,sun,moon and austerity.He -also gave him eleven other names Manya, Manu, Mahinasa,Mahan,Shiva,Ritadhvaja ,Ugrareta,Bhava,Kala,Vamadeva and Dtritavrata ,Eleven wives- the Rudraanis,Dhi,Dhriti,Rasala,Uma,Niyut,Sarpi,Ila,Ambika,Iravati,Saudha,and Diksha .

Brahma ordered Rudra to increase population . The powerful blue Red Rudra then created many sons exectly like himself-fierce and terrible .They assembled together and tried to devour entire universe with the fiery flams from their eyes.

Seeing this fearful situation ,Brahma said,” O best among demigods,there is no need for you to generate living entities of this nature.They have begin to devastate everything . You had better situate yourself in penance,which is auspicious for all living entities. By penance only can one approach the Personality of Godhead who is within the heart of every living entity.”

Thus ordered Rudra circumambulated his father,the master of the Vedas and entered the forest to perform austere penances.

4.The Ten Great Sages and the Vedas :-

After Rudra departed ,Brahma ,empowered by the Supreme Lord ,begot ten sons for the extension of generations – Marichi,Angira,Pulastya,Pulaha,Kritu,Bhrigu,Vashishtha,Daksha and the tenth Narada.

Narada was born from Brahma’s delibration,Vishishtha from his breathing,Daksha from his thumb,Bhrigu from his touch,Kritu from his hand,Pulastya from his ears,Marichi from his mind,and Pulaha from his navel.From Brahma’s body other principles also manifested-religion from his breast- where Lord Narayana is seated,irreligion from his back,lust from his heart ,anger from between his eyebrows,greed from his lips,the power of speaking from his mouth,the ocean from his penis and sinful activities from his anus.

It is also said that Brahma had a daughter named Vak who was born from his body .When his mind was attracted to her,his sons headed by Marichi respectfully chided him,saying such an immoral act had never been attempted by any one before.Hearing their truthful words ,Brahma came ashamed and at once gave up that body,which appeared as fog in darkness.

Then as Brahma was thinking how to create as in the past millinnium,the four vedas manifested from his four mouths,From his mouths also appeared the paraphernalia for fire sacrifice,the four principles of religion-truth,austerity,mercy and cleanliness-the four social orders,the four spritual ordes,military science,medical science,musical art,artitecural science and finally the fifth Veda -the Puranas and histories,The secred syllable Onkra manifested from his heart.

5. The Creation of Man and Women.

Svayambhuva Manu-

Therefore Brahma acceped another body and seriously considered that in spite of great sages there was no sufficient increase in population. While thus absorbed ,from his body two other forms were generated-They are still celebrated as the body of Brahma -The two forms united in a sexual relationship,out of them ,the one who had the male form became known as Svayambhuva Manu and the women became known as Shatrupa,the queen of the great saul Manu.

Through their sexual union ,they gradually increased the population .In due course of time ,Manu begot in Shatrupa five children-two sons, Priabarata and Uttanpada ,and three daughters ,Akuti,Devhuti and Prasuti. Manu handed over his first daughter Akutito sage Ruchi,the middle daughter Devhuti to sage Kardma,and the youngest Prasuti to Daksha. From them the entire world became filled with population.

Thus ends the Twelveth Chapter of the Third Canto ,entitled” Creation of the Kumaras and others”.

Philosophical Eseance :

This chapter shows the three modes of Creation ,the failure of tamasic creation ,the detachment of pure devotees like the Kumaras who refuse mateerial entanglement ,the terrible power of anger which manifests as Rudra ,and finally the successful creation through the divine institution of marriage as shown by Manu and Satarupa.
