shrimdbhagavate Conto 3 Chapter 13
The Appearance of Lord Varaha.
This thirteenth chapter of the third conto of shrimdbhagavate describes one of the most powerful and beloved incarnations of Lord Vishnu ,the Varaha Avtar .The story begins with the enquiries of Vidura and narretion of Maitreya Muni .
Vidura ,after hearing about the creation of the universe ,asks Maitreya rishi about the further pastime of the Lord -Maitreya pleased withVidura’s devotion begins to narrate how the Earth which had fallen into the depth of the Garbhodala Ocean, was lifted by the Lord.
At the begnning of the creation ,Lord Brahma the creator ,was engaged in his work. From his mind many sons like Marichi and others were born.Among them was Manu ,the father of mankind ,known as Svaayambhuva Manu . Brahma ordered Manu to create progeny and to rule the world and protect dharma .
Manu folded his hands and said to Brahma “O father,I will obey your order .But please tell me ,where shall I place the living beings ? For I see that the Earth has fallen into the great ocean of Garbha .It submerged in water.Hearing this Lord Brahma became geatly worried. He thought,” while I was engaged in creation ,the Earth has sunk into the water. How can I bring it up ?This is my responsibitity. The Lord who has given me this work of creation will surely help me .”
While Brahma was thinking in this way ,suddenly a small boar ,not larger than the tip of a thumb ,came out from his nostril. To the great surprise of Brahma .That tiny boar ,within moments, began to grow .In a few seconds ,it became as large as a great elephant and then as large as a huge moutain in the sky ,its roaring was like thunder.
All the sages in the assembly of Brahma ,including Marichi and others ,and Brahma himself ,were astonished to see this wonderful form.Brahma began to think ,” Who is this exraordinary boar ?.How has it appeared from my nose ?”
While they were thinking ,the boar roared again with a great sound that echoed in all directions. The Lord in the form of a boar wanted to encourage Brahma and the sages who were expert in chanting vedic Mantras. The sound of his roar was so deep and pleasing that it gave joy to Brahma and the Brahmanas.
Then understanding that it was none other than the Supreme Personality of Godhead ,Lord Vishnu Himself,Brahma offered prayers with vedic hymns. The sages also chanted auspicious mantras for his victory.
The Supreme Lord Sri Varahadeva, then entered into the water of the Garbhadaka Ocean .With his sharp hooves,He cut the water His body was extremely hard, like stone. His skin was rough ,His hairs were like sharp spikes . He entered the water like a great mountain and his pesence caused a great disturbance in the ocean .
He was searching for the Earth ,with his transcendental eyes,He finally saw the Earth lying deep inside the ocean, just as it had been at the time of creation,The Earth who is considered as a mother and is very dear to the Lord ,was in great distress .The Lord left great compassion.
The Lord then went near the Earth and with His long curved tusks, He lifted the Earth from the ocean The Earth ,resting on His tusks ,looked very beautiful ,like a lotus flower in the tusks of an elephant.
At that moment,to stop the Lord from his mission ,a powerful demon named Hiranyaksh appeared .He was the brother of Hirnyakshipu He was very powerful ,armed with a nice and he challenged the Lord .He roared like a lion and tried to block the way of Varahadeva .
But Lord Varaha did not care for his challenge at that moment because His first duty was to save the Earth with great care and balance .He first brought the Earth out of the water and placed her floating on the surface of the ocean,in her original position. By the Lord ,potency the Earth again because capable of floating on water ,just as a great ship floats its own arrangement.
After placing the Earth safely ,the Lord turned His attention to the demon .The sage watching from above were worried ,but Brahma assured them that the Lord would kill this demon who was a cause of trouble to the whole world .
Then began a terrible fight between Lord Varaha and Hirnyaksha .This fight is described in detail in the following chapters. But this chapter ends with the wonderful act of the Lord saving the Earth.
The inner meaning of this pastime is very deep. The Earth represents our consciousness ,which after drowns in the ocean of ignorance ,lust and material desires .The demon Hirnaksha represent greed and the exploitation nature that drags the Earth down. And Lord Varaha represents the mercy of God ,who comes Himself to lift us when we cannot lift ourselves.
Maitreya Muni tells Vidura that anyone who hears this story of Lord Varaha with faith, who chants it and remembers it,becomes free from all sins. The Lord how lifted the Earth also lifts the fallen soul from the ocean of repeated birth and death .He is the ultimate protector of dharma and of all living beings.
Thus ends the narration of the thirteenth chapter of the Third Conto of Shrimdbhagavat describing the divine appearance of Lord Varahadeva.
